The RAINBOW has
always had a place in history & legend due to its spectacular beauty and the difficulty in explaining this weather phenomenon.
Here are some examples:
Nearly 350 years ago, Galileo formulated his scientific theories on light & it’s properties. About
the same year, 1667, Sir Isaac Newton, considered one of the greatest geniuses to ever live, was the 1st to theorize
& demonstrate (using glass prisms) that white light (i.e. Sun) was the blending
and not the lack of color. He proved that white
light is made up of 7 primary colors which we see in Rainbows.
In science class, the teacher
used prisms to show us how we can recreate rainbows in the classroom, similar to Newton’s experiments. It
was an effective, yet simple, experiment showing us that rainbows are the result of the refracting (bending) the white light as it passed from
air through crystal. The resulting rainbow light spectrum was composed of
the 7 primary colors: Red, Orange,
Yellow, Green, Blue,
Indigo, & Violet (Roy G. Biv). These experiments also introduced us to the wonderful world of traditional crystal
prisms.
Our traditional
prisms, here at Crystal Emporium, are optically-clear,
full-leaded prisms which produce fantastic rainbows too! We carry a wide variety too featuring Beveled
Rectangles, Pointed Spades, & Whisks and many in Clear & Aurora Borealis coating (known as AB - a
micro thin layer of 24k gold applied permanently to the prism). It is the most popular coating and, without
question, it’s absolutely gorgeous! Some of our traditional prisms have either 1 or 2 holes for easy
hanging in your favorite sunny area next to your other crystal prisms, or by itself due to its classic form and shape.
These make excellent gifts which will last virtually forever!
